“Meditation & Its Benefits” is a blog that I am writing based on the learning from my Masters and my meditation experience of over 13 years.

In 2005, I was blessed to be accepted as a disciple by my Masters at OshoDhara.  OshoDhara is a live mystery school nurtured by a trinity of enlightened masters (Sadguru Trivir) following the teachings of OSHO.

OSHO has narrated a beautiful story. I would like to start with that.

Story of breaking the Coconut

The Question

Once upon a time, there was a person who met a Saint. The person asked the Saint, “How is it possible that Jesus was full of love even for those who were crucifying him. And not only Jesus, there have been many Saints, Gurus & Spiritual Masters in the past, who could not only forgive their enemies but also were full of love for them?”

Coconut Experiment by the Saint

Instead of replying to this question, the Saint gave that person a tender green coconut and asked him to break it. But there is a condition that only the outer green cover should break. The inside copra, the white eatable part of the coconut should not break at all.

The person said that it is not possible.

The Saint took the tender coconut and replaced it with the dry coconut. Then he asked the person to break it, but the condition remains the same.

The person said that it is very easy and he can break the coconut without damaging the internal copra.

The Saint took that coconut also and said that there is no need to break even this coconut.

He asked a question to that person. “Why is it that you feel you can break the dry coconut and not the tender one, without damaging the internal white copra?”

The person said that it is because the copra in the tender coconut is stuck to the walls of the outer covering whereas when the coconut becomes dry, the copra gets disconnected with the outer covering and there becomes a space between the two. When there is a space between the two, it is easy to break the outer covering without damaging the internal copra.

The Answer of the Saint

The Saint said that it is the answer to your question.

Those who could create a space between their internal soul and the external body, like the ripe coconut, remain unaffected even if something happens to their outer physical body.

MEDITATION IS A TECHNIQUE TO GET THIS REALIZATION IN LIFE.

All those saints who were full of love even for their enemies have actually attained that state through Meditation.

Realizations Through Meditation

If you do meditation regularly, you will have two important realizations:

  1. As the real coconut is the copra inside and the outer body is its cover. Similarly, through Meditation, you get a realization that my real self is the soul, the spirit and my outer body is just like a cover, an external casing.
  2. The physical body is moral and it has to finish one day or the other; whereas the soul is like an energy which is immortal & eternal.

With these two realizations, your approach towards life will change phenomenally.

Let us try to understand through an example

Scene 1

Suppose you are an employee and you work in an office or at some shop. You are working there for years together. You love your place, you keep it clean take care of it, manage it well.

Now imagine that one day that office or shop building catches a huge fire. What would you do & how would you feel?

You would first save yourself by running out of the building. Then obviously you will try to extinguish the fire, call for help, call the fire brigade & police to control and extinguish the fire. Precisely, you would do whatever best is possible to save the property or minimize the damage.

Scene 2

Imagine that instead of office or shop on fire, now your own purchased house is on fire.

You would exactly do the same as you did for your office or shop.

But will you have the same feelings?

Obviously many of us would not have the same feeling. This difference in feeling cannot be explained in words, but I am sure, you would have understood & realized it well.

The very thought that my purchased house is on fire will shake us to the roots, whereas we will be a little detached when there is a fire in the office or in shop.

Same Difference through Meditation

When you do meditation and get the realization that I am not the mortal body but the immortal soul. When you could feel the two as two different faculties and a gap, a space between the two, your approach to your life would change.

Then one day you can also attain the state where you will not only be full of love for your enemies but roar on the top of your voice, “O God! Forgive them as they do not know what they are doing”. They are trying to damage the mortal body thinking that they are doing harm to me. I am the immortal soul and no action from their side can damage or destroy me.

Benefits Of Meditation

Imagine that you have attained the state where you could feel that there is a space between your body & the soul and get identified with soul instead of body & mind. Now understanding the benefits of Meditation will be pretty easy:

1. You will never be in the grip of negative stress, anxiety or depression.

You know it very well that your mind & body are your external covering; but you are a soul. You will do the best for them but will not be much affected by the result.

2. You will be free from all type of fears.

All fears are the derivatives of the fear of death. Once you realize that you as a soul are immortal and the body is mortal and has to die one day, you will accept your death. Then the fear of death will go away. As a result all your fears will also go away.

3. Happiness, celebration & joy will become integral part of your life

Once you know that your existence is eternal, there shall be no misery in life. You will become happy irrespective of the circumstances in life.

4. Your health will improve

You might be surprised to know that 90% of the diseases are psychosomatic in nature. The root cause is in the mind in the form of negative emotions and the manifestation of the disease is on the body. Once you are free from negative stress, anxiety, depression, anger, fears and all other negative emotions, you will be free from 90% of the diseases.

5. Healing of your body will improve

Our body has beautiful auto healing mechanisms. When we do meditation, we get connected with the cosmic universal energy which heals our body.

6. You will become Successful in life

The life will become like a stage play for you. Your acceptance power of the result will increase. Your performance pressure & anxiety of the result will vanish.

Once you perform without the performance pressure and without the anxiety of the result, your quality of work & action will get improved substantially and the chances of becoming successful in your life increases manifold.

7. Your relationships will become cordial

Once you are happy, you spread happiness around you. A happy person neither gets hurt by others behavior nor tries to hurt others. Once you behave genuinely, loving, with care & affection, the same positivity will be reciprocated from other side.

Your expectations from the others will reduce and as a result your relations with family, friends & at workplace will improve.

8. Many other benefits

The list is long. I am sure, at this stage, it is easy for you to understand many other benefits of Meditation yourself.

A line of caution

We postpone the good things and immediately do the wrong things. We postpone love but not the anger. We postpone meditation for the old age, which is the biggest crime that a person can do with him.

Benefits of meditation can be achieved in life only by doing and not by knowing.
