“Happiness is the glue of Unity” is the output of my analysis of the strained relationships; that I see as a counselor daily.
I would like to start with a small story (Unity is Strength) that our granny had told us when we were small.
The Story told by Granny
Once upon a time in a village there lived a farmer who had four sons. They were always quarreling with one another. The farmer tried his level best to bring them on the right path. But they never listened to the farmer and ignored his advice.
So the farmer was very worried and he thought, “How am I going to convince them that if they keep on quarreling with themselves, then others will take advantage of them”. They have to be together.
One day, he thought of an idea. He called his sons and asked them to bring a few sticks. All four sons went around and brought some wooden sticks with them. When they brought those sticks, he tied them in one bundle and gave the bundle to each son and asked them to use their full strength and try to break it. They tried all their strength and power to break the bundle of sticks but could not break it at all. They returned the bundle to the farmer.
Now farmer opened the bundle and gave one stick each to his sons and asked them to break the stick. That was very easy and each of his sons could break the stick at once.
The sons realized what their father was trying to teach them.
They realized that if they keep on quarreling and are not united, then anyone can break them and take advantage of them but if they stay united and work together, they will be so strong like bundle of the sticks that nobody can break their unity and they will always prosper.
Are we really united?
In-spite of listening the story, are we really united? It is the burning question on the table.
Practicality appears to be much different, much ugly, and much hostile than the moral of the story.
Instead of experiencing “UNITY” in the relationships; it is seen that almost all the relations are strained. May they be the relations of husband-wife, or child-parent, or boss-subordinate or among peers, friends, neighbors, families or any relations for that matter.
The matter of surprise
It is surprising, that almost all of us would have heard this story and still we are we not united? This story is passing from one generation to another, since ages.
Either we have not understood the importance of UNITY, or we have understood it only to the level of our intellect and have not allowed it to go deep down in our blood & behavior.
The Irony of the fate
The irony of the fate is that the parents who themselves are not united; who are having strained relations even after listening this story; are repeating the same story to their kids; expecting them to understand the importance of unity and remain united with their brothers and sisters.
High Time for introspection.
When we have reached to a stage where every relation is strained or tensed, it is the high time to do an introspection as to why are we not united? Why our relation are becoming a reason for unhappiness, worries and tension; instead of happiness, love and care.
Though we all understand the importance of unity, then why are we lacking it?
I started to analyze it from the very basics.
If we forget our relatives, for the time being and let us bring the attention to ourselves, we will find that we are not single but a combination of mind, body, intellect and soul?
I put the first point for introspection:
Are we united at the level of our mind, body, intellect and soul?
Do we do what we think and think what we feel?
As a counselor, since many people come to me for counseling, I get an opportunity to observe it very closely in many people’s lives.
And the answer is a big NO?
Hypocrisy is something that deep seeded in our personality & behavior. What we feel for others, we do not show it to them.
I remember a small joke:
A small child asked the guests “Uncle Are you Bastard?” The guest was surprised and angry but controlled his feelings since he was a small child. So the guest asked, “Why are you asking this?” Then the child replies that his father was saying inside that this bastard has come once again.
But when the guest had come, his father had greeted him with open arms and behaved as if it is really an honor to have him here.
This hypocrisy (difference in thinking and behaving) is a reason of many psychosomatic diseases also.
How a person, who is not united in himself at the level of his mind, body, intellect and soul; can be united with other family members.
It is absolutely impossible.
Hence, the solution is to start working on ourselves to have unity between our mind, body, intellect and our soul.
And once we ourselves are united, we will feel HAPPY.
Happiness is the glue of unity; that unites people
Only a HAPPY person can think of uniting with others.
Try to analyse from your own experiences:
When you are happy; what do you do?
When you are very happy, you have got a promotion or a birthday or a marriage ceremony; you throw a party, invite all your friends & relatives, celebrate and share your happiness with everyone.
You take initiative to meet other people. You like to be surrounded with people.
When you are sad, what do you do?
When there is an unpleasant event or incident in life; a setback or anything of that sort, you escape from others, cut off from the world. If the grief is intense, some people might enter into depression.
So when you are sad, you don’t like to meet people, you prefer to be in your own cocoon.
Conclusion of my Analysis
My conclusion, after an in-depth analysis, is:
- unity is important
- there is a meaning in granny’s story
- Happiness is the glue of unity.
A person who is happy in himself can only unite with others.
For happiness, first we have to work on the unity at the level of our mind, body, intellect and soul.
We have to remove Hypocrisy from our life, be honest, truthful and courageous.
Then the next step would be to get united with family & friends.
Happy relationships will become necessary ingredient of our life and we would feel very energetic and light as if we have got the wings to fly.
